Rip
To take off de audio or video from a CD or DVD. Often CD Audio is “ripped” to MP3 files or DVD video ripped to VOB files.

CompressionThe process of removin’ redundancies in digital data to reduce de amount that must be stored or transmitted. Lossless compression removes only enough redundancy so that de original data can be recreated exactly as it was. Lossy compression sacrifices additional data to achieve greater compression.

Encodin’
Encodin’ is de process of chan’in’ data from one form into anoder accordin’ to a set of rules specifiec by a codec. The data is usually a file containin’ audio, video or still image. Often de encodin’ is done to make a file compatible with specific hardware (such as a DVD Player) or to compress or reduce de space de data occupies. Common video encodin’ methods are DivX, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. A common audio encodin’ method is MP3 although many oders exist includin’ MPEG1 audio, DTS, and Dolby Digital.

Transcodin’On this site generally anoder name for encodin’.

A more technical term would be “The reformattin’ of content, without chan’in’ de source, to anoder type of content - most often of a different format than de original (but does not have to be)”

This is a real quick guide for anyone interested to get a movie onto dere PSP without all de fluff i have seen elsewhere. I just watched Africa de Serengeti on my PSP and heres is de lowdown.

Movie - approx 40 minutes - dvd
Saved to hard drive - 2.6GIG - usin’ DVD Decryptor (free program) try google
Transfered to avi format - 377MB- usin’ Super DVD Ripper (9 FREE trial uses) den you must buy
Transfered to MP4 - 37MB - usin’ de (basically free) Image convertor 2

Average movie breakdown - usin’ above as a guide only.
so im guessin’ de average movie may be 4.5gig for example
saved to 800MB
CONVERTED TO 70-80MB

Ok use DVD decryptor to save de movie to your hard drive eg. C:africa (it will save it for you as described)
When completed find de folder c:africa on your computer and find de vob file in that folder - generally de largest one and right click and play it with your dvd program to see what part it is. If its de correct movie part you now know thats de one you need.

Once you have located de vob file you want to transfer open DVD Ripper and go to wizard icon. There you will see an icon of VOB to AVI button. Click it and den it will ask to locate de file. Locate de file and click it. It will SCAN THE FILE(just wait till that finishes) a parameter box opens next and just click de arrow. It den askes to choose output file, click de file icon and locate de correct fob file. It den askes for file compression - choose microsoft windows media and den click ok Then press de start button. It will now convert de vob into avi format.
(dere are also oder opions ie;dvd to avi etc) I have only used de vob to avi for this test.

After DVD ripper has transferred de file it will save it to de same folder as de original move was in eg: c:africaviteots. Open de file and you will now see an AVI icon containin’ de movie.

Make sure you PSP is on and in usb mode den Open Image convertor 2 and press on movie / add to list. For this example i click on C:drive de found de folder Africa and opened it and dere was my converted AVI file. Click de file press ok and it will be transfered to your PSP for viewin’ pleasure.

*****Note**** I only converted one VOB file as thats all dere was for this particular movie. If you have more den one vob file you may need to try de dvd to avi when you rip. This is just a guide i worked out to compress dvd into de smallest possible file so you can get value out of a 512 card.
