How To Get 10000 Hits Daily Part 1

If you take the time to set up my simple system you will receive a steady flow of traffic to your site for many years to come.

This is the how I get 10,000 Hits A Day to my website for free:

This is the first in a series of four installments which will explain not only how to earn credit from 20 traffic exchanges at the same time, but also how to use this extra traffic to generate leads and referrals. Be sure to save all four to your computer. The next four installments will show you how to:

1. Generate credits on 10 traffic exchanges.
2. Generate credits on the next 10 traffic exchanges.
3. Generate leads and referrals by replicating the 10,000 Hits A Day system.
4. Put it all together.

Below is a list of the first 10 different start page exchange programs that I currently use:

1. Nine Mile Hits
www.ninemilehits.com

2. Traffic Roundup
www.trafficroundup.com

3. Traffic Syndicate 25
www.ts25.com

4. Hit Safari
www.hitsafari.com

5. Traffic Pods
www.trafficpods.com

6. Deep Sea Hits
www.deepseahits.com

7. Start Xchange
www.startxchange.com

8. Mystical Maze
www.mysticalmaze.com

9. Webmaster Quest
www.webmasterquest.com

10. I Love Clicks
www.iloveclicks.com

Here is how you can use all of these programs at the same time:

1. Go to www.avantbrowser.com or www.crazybrowser.com and download their free browser. These browsers each have the ability to open multiple sites and windows inside a single browser. They can handle multiple monitors and have tab status indicators. Annoying pop ups can be removed automatically and multiple pages can be saved and reopened together.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: Below I will refer to the browser you have downloaded as Avant Browser. However, if you have downloaded and prefer Crazy Browser, please use that instead.

2. Now click on all the links above to join these programs. If you’re already a member of some of these programs you can just use the URLs you already have. When you join these programs make sure to save all the URLs - both for your start pages and for your referral links!

3. Avant Browser has a feature that allows you to save any combination of URLs as individual groups. In the address line, copy and paste your surf/start page URL for Nine Mile Hits and press the Enter-Key, Nine Mile Hits surf page is loading. Now pen a new window & copy and paste the surf/start page URL of Traffic Roundup into the address line; again press the Enter-Key and Traffic Roundup will load in a new window. If you want to go back to the first window, click on the tab to the left. Use the tabs at the top of the page to navigate where you want to go.

Now enter all the remaining surf/start page URL s in new windows. Don’t forget to press the Enter-Key after you’ve typed in the URL. After you finished entering the 10 programs, click on the main menu “Groups” and then click on ‘Create New Group’. A windows file window will open, give your group a name, e.g. 10000 hits-1 and click on ‘Save’.

4. After you have this set up, you can start Avant Browser and simply click on the saved group in the menu bar from the drop-down menu under ‘Groups’. When the pages finish loading, you can just click on the next tab to go to the next page and begin clicking for hits!

5. If you have a slow connection and/or not very powerful computer, opening ten pages at the same time may be too much. If this is the case, try fewer pages until your computer is running smooth enough to load all of the pages. I highly recommend getting a high speed connection if it is at all possible. Internet life is much better that way.

6. Avant Browser is able to block Flash Animations, Pictures, Sounds, and Videos which can save you up to 95% of your bandwidth. These options can be found in the Tools menu.

Using this method with a cable connection I can generate 900 hit credits in a little over 1 hour. You can set your own target according to your connection speed and time limits. Even without any referrals, working 10 traffic exchanges at once using this method allows you to generate a large amount of traffic. Add the traffic you can generate by sharing this method with referrals and we’re talking major streams of free traffic.

Tomorrow: Setting up the next 10 traffic exchanges.

Step 6. Pay Per Click Engines

OK lets get the snowball rolling!

Right, so we’ve got the site all nice and sticky, its been optimized for search engines and its been submitted to the major engines and automatically sent to FFA pages, now to give the little guy another push to get him going - But this time its going to cost a little!

We need to get the snowball on its way and kick start the journey down the hill.

So lets get going.

Regular search engines take months to get positions in and start bringing the traffic. The way to get traffic immediately from the search engines is to start dealing with the pay-per-click search engines such as Overture.com. (Other sites that are currently famous is Google Adwords, Google Adsense and www.miva.com)

Overture.com allows you to set up an account and then you only pay a set fee (almost in an auction model) for each visitor to your site. If you bid one penny per visitor, then you only have to pay a single penny for every visitor to your site. If you bid ten cents, you pay ten cents. If you have tested and can bid a dollar per visitor, then that is what you will pay - How much you pay for traffic is up to you.

There are now several hundred search engines following this model. Most of them don’t produce nearly as much traffic as Overture.com, but some of them can be used once you have proven the effectiveness of your keywords at Overture.com first.

The first step is deciding on which keywords to bid on and then how much to bid. Its a good idea to set aside a monthly amount for Overture.com and decide to budget for that amount. Its possible to set-up an account by making a deposit and then having automatic deductions up to a pre-determined monthly limit. When the account is exhausted of funds then the listing is removed from the engine until the next month.

Pay per click search engines are perfect vehicles for providing highly targeted traffic. You are paying only for a visitor who has an interest in your website which will be determined by the link headline and link description.

There is an optimum price which you should pay for every click through or visitor. This price will be determined by the average value of the visitor. This is why you need access to detailed website statistics as you will need to know the average number of daily visitors. Once you have this figure divide the average daily net profit received by the website and this will give the average value of each visitor.

As a rule of thumb a bid of 50% of the average value is a guideline for how much to bid for each keyword. Then it doesn’t matter how much you are spending - you are making profit. So just keep topping the account up as and when required.

There are lots of pay per click engines around at the moment

You can find them at: www.payperclicksearchengines.com

Step 4. Build It Up With FFAs

FFA (Free For All) link pages is the next layer of traffic to collect around your traffic snowball.

These pages are simply a categorized listing of links that are added to by submission services or submission software such as Submit Wolf.

The link is added to the top of the list and is then rotated down as other links are added until the link eventually drops out.

Because of the increasing number of submissions to FFA pages, the link does spend much time on the page before being dropped - sometimes just a few hours - so the exposure of the link to your website can be very limited. Your listing might stay on the FFA site for a few days or a week. On FFA sites which get many submissions, your listing might only stay on the site for a day or less. On a few very busy FFAs, you’ll be on the site for less than an hour before your listing gets bumped down and off the list. (but don’t be concerned, these are only a fraction of the thousands of FFA sites, and in a moment I’m going to explain how you can get on thousands of FFAs)

However, this does not mean that we should not consider FFA pages as a useful tool and in fact if used correctly, FFA pages become a valuable layer on our Traffic Snowball.

One important thing to know is that the majority of the traffic to the FFA sites is from people visiting in order to post their own URL.

But there is good news.

The listings are on the same page as the submission form. That means that all listings are “in your face.” Also, once someone submits their URL, they’ll scan the page to make sure it got listed. In other words, your listing will be seen. If you have an effective attention-getting headline that results in click-throughs, you’re in. And remember, keep in mind who is visiting the FFA sites, and why. Then gear your headlines to attract those type of visitors.

In order to do well with FFA marketing, you’ll need to do batch submissions. And you must do them regularly, because by the nature of FFA sites, your URL will eventually get bumped down and then off the list.

The other side of FFA Marketing

Basically, there are 2 sides of the FFA coin - one side is publicity from submission and the other is publicity from ACCEPTING submissions.

The first is very straightforward in approach. If you can submit your site for FREE to 1000’s of FFA pages with minimum effort and on a regular basis then WHY NOT as you WILL pick up traffic.

The trick is that your advertisements must stand out from the others and you must submit on a regular basis i.e.. daily. The current view on FFA pages is that you need to constantly submit your site in order to see any hits. The theory is if you submit to one hundred FFA sites, you may get a click or two. Automate this process and submit to hundreds and you may end up with a decent amount of traffic.

ROIbot FFA Submission Server solves this problem by creating a completely automated process for submitting to the FFA pages on a continual basis. FFA Submission Server can be setup to submit your sites to our dynamic list of FFA pages on a regular basis. Set it up once and you’re done! You can set it up to submit as often as you like.

The other side of the coin and can be a greater source of building traffic is creating your own FFA page. Remember, there is a good reason why these pages exist and the answer is that they are a mechanism for sending a SPAM free email message to the site owner who has submitted to the FFA page.

FFA pages are configured using CGI scripts to send out an email message to the address that was submitted with the link. The message is simply a thank you message that has the page owners promotional message. As such websites receive 100’s or 1000’s of submissions on a daily basis then the page owners message is automatically being sent to all these people with no effort on behalf of the FFA page owner.

You can get your own FFA page for FREE at: www.ffanet.net

Not only do you get a fully customizable FFA Site, Free AutoResponder, and YOUR banner placed on the top of YOUR site, the FFA Net emailing system is “PC-based” and each morning you’ll receive approximately 250 to 350 VERY high-quality targeted leads in your email box.

You Have To Have Links

Slowly but surely, links are where the traffic is!

Link popularity and link relevancy, have become the most important factors in determining whether you show up on page 1 or page 1,000 of the search results.

Requesting links is tedious, boring, and too closely resembles work! But you have to do it… if you want to get any traffic from the search engines, that is.

Stay away from the shortcuts on this one because they’ll cause you more harm than good. Spend the time finding sites that have a lot of links pointing to them and that get a great deal of traffic.

Each time you convince a decent site to link to your website, you stand to gain more visitors to your site, as well as a nice boost in the ranking of your site on the search engines.

As more and more sites link to you, you’ll see your search engine traffic start to increase because they will view your site as being more important.

Think about it: What if every site that links to you sends you 10 visitors per day. Find just 10 of those and you’ve picked up another 100 visitors per day…FREE!

Burn a little midnight oil and get that number up to 100 sites, and you now have 1,000 visitors a day sifting through your site!

Keep in mind that some links won’t bring you any traffic at all, and others will send one here, and one there. But these add up over time, so don’t dismiss a site because you don’t think you’ll get thousands of visitors from it.

Another reason I stress finding your own link partners rather than using some of the “5,000 links a day” programs is that the latest search engine trends are to rank the sites that link to you.

It’s not the quantity, but the quality that counts!

This means that 10 sites that have 100 sites linking to each of them is better than 100 sites with only 10 sites linking to them.

Basically, the search engines give a higher weighting to sites that link to you that are also popular themselves. There are many more factors in determining the popularity of a site, but you can typically use this as a good rule of thumb when searching out partners.

This makes sense because if an important site likes your site enough to link to it, then the search engines will like it too.

This is called Link Relevance, or Link Importance. Where Link Popularity merely counts the number of incoming links to your website, Link Relevance attempts to actually rank each of those sites that are linking to you.

By the way, the best tool I’ve seen out there for finding important sites to request links from (those that have many incoming links to them), is called Internet Success Spider by Neil Shearing.

You can either choose to enter in the URL of a popular site, or enter in search keywords that your target audience would search for. When the Spider is finished crunching, it will give you a list of sites, sorted by number of incoming links, that you can then contact and request a link from.

This can save you many, many hours of wasted time requesting links from lesser important sites, and allows you to focus on only the ones that will increase your website’s link relevance. You’ll also stand a good chance of getting a quite a bit of traffic through from these sites.

Internet Success Spider can save you a ton of time and allow you to build partnerships that can be worth many, many thousands of dollars.

I’ve used it to find a number of great affiliates for my affiliate program. In fact, one wonderful lady I discovered using the Spider software jumped onto my top 10 affiliates list in less than a week after I contacted her!

Use it to find out what sites are linking to your competitors, or that link to high ranking sites, and then contact them to see if they will link to yours as well.

Create some mini sites

An inexpensive and not-too-time-consuming option is to create several mini sites, and link them to your main site.

Mini sites are great at getting top rankings on the search engines because they are typically very focused on a particular topic, which the search engines like.

If you spend some time learning the steps to creating successful mini sites, you can get a quite a bit of traffic from them, while also increasing the link popularity of your main site.

The best resource by far on this subject is Phil Wiley’s “Mini Site Profits” ebook. If you understand the profit potential of mini sites, you’ll make sure you have Phil’s ebook in your library!

Setup a few of these sites and you can quickly start to see a large increase in traffic to your website, as well as more sales from the targeted visitors. (The extra sales should easily cover the small expense of Phil’s ebook)

A little creativity goes a long way

There are many different strategies that you can use to get more links to your website. In fact, i can recommend one of the ebooks named Website Traffic System with the topic “131 Link Building Strategies”.

I highly recommend that you put some effort into this because nothing else you do will give you as much long term rewards for your time.

One thing that I learned (another one of those “Why didn’t I do this earlier!”) is that for some sites it works better if you create a graphic of some sort for others to link to you with. I had always offered up a text link to people that added their affiliate program to my directory.

I rarely received links this way! I know that you would think people wouldn’t want a graphic on their site, but I found that when I created a few graphics and then told them they could use the graphic to link to me, the number of sites linking to me increased very quickly!

This may not work for your type of site, but I give this as an example to show you that you need to keep an open mind and be willing to try different methods.

I can’t stress enough the importance of getting lots of links!

Introduction

The question that I’m asked most often by my customers and subscribers is:

“How do I get more traffic to my website?”

And whenever the subject of search engines comes up, it’s quickly followed by:

“But how can I get a good listing in the search engines when they keep changing the way they rank sites?”

Well, there are many ways to get traffic, and the good news about search engines is that they don’t change the way they rank sites that often.

What changes is that they put in better ways of catching those that try to trick and spam them.

For example, if you have an illegal adult site and you’re trying to get it to show up when people search for “mortgage information”, the search engines will figure this out and will probably ban your site.

As long as you play by their rules, you don’t have to worry about this happening to you. I know there are some horror stories out there on this, but for the most part if you play your cards right you can expect to get traffic from the search engines for a long time.

Some examples I’m sure you may have heard about are:

1) Put popular search terms in your Meta Tags (even if it has nothing to do with your site.)
2) Place many, many keywords at the bottom of your page and change the font color so that visitors don’t see them.
3) Purchase software that will greatly inflate the number of links to your site.

This is just a small sample, and I’m sure at one point these tricks actually worked, but the search engines eventually figure this out and put in special exclusions for sites using these methods.

Because so many people subscribe to these theories, many will have you believe that search engines are really not even worth your time and effort when promoting your website.

To put it simply: Yes they are!

The long-term, targeted, and in most cases FREE traffic generated by the search engines just cannot be overlooked.

It does take time to get listed, and even longer to get listed well. But once your site is listed and is listed well, you can expect a steady stream of targeted visitors for many months to come.

What may really shock you is that it is not that difficult to get a great listing in the search engines … and to even get listed well for great keywords.

It doesn’t happen overnight, and you can’t just push a button and expect to magically appear at the top of the listings, but it can be done.

6 Steps to QuickStart Your Affiliate Business

In this section I discuss the 6 steps you will take to quickly, easily and inexpensively get started in your affiliate marketing business.

Quickly & Easily find High Demand Topics

The topic you choose should both interest you and have high consumer demand. You already know what interests you, but how do you find out whether a topic has high demand?

Well, the first place I check is a free tool call the Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool. It is located at:

inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion

At Overture Search Term Suggestion tool, you simply enter a term related to your site and it will show you:

• Related searches that include your term
• How many times that term was searched in the previous month

So, let’s assume for a moment that you are a mortgage and insurance broker who suspects that insurance might be a good service to sell online.

To find out how many people are looking for insurance online, I typed in the word ‘insurance’ and discovered that the keyword ‘insurance’ had been searched for 971,914 times at Overture and its search partners in just one month!

That’s almost a million people! Wow!

As I consider any term that receives 50,000 or more searches in a month a subject with good demand and potentially viable, insurance looks like it might just be a winning topic for an affiliate web site.

Find High-Profit Potential Products & Services

Once you’ve determined that your topic is in high demand, you need to find out now is whether there are merchants selling related products and services online, AND how much commission they pay.

For that, I go first to Commission Junction.

Commission Junction is an ‘affiliate network’ that puts merchants and affiliates together. They refer to merchants as ‘advertisers’ and the affiliates are called ‘publishers’.

To see all the merchants with products and services at Commission Junction, you’ll need to set up a free account.

To do that, go to Commission Junction, then click on ‘Solutions’ near the top right- hand portion of the page, then go to the left side of the Solutions page and click on ‘CJ Marketplace’.

At the very bottom of that page and you’ll find a link for the application process. Where it asks you to supply a URL, just enter yahoo.com or geocities.com if you don’t already have a web site.

Once your account is set up and you’ve logged into the Commission Junction interface, click on ‘Get Links’, and select ‘Advertisers’ in the drop-down box beside the word ‘Search’ near the top of the page. Next, type in the word ‘insurance’.

My search came up with 51 merchants. Your results may be more or less depending on whether merchants have been added to, or dropped from the network.

In choosing merchants, you want to select those with the highest EPC ratings and commissions.

What is an EPC Rating?

3-month EPC: 3-month EPC (earnings per 100 clicks) shows how well an advertiser converts Web site visitors into commissions, over a three-month period.

7-day EPC: 7-day EPC (earnings per 100 clicks) shows the average commissions paid to publishers for every 100 clicks, over the past seven days. Use this number to see the most recent EPC trend for advertisers.

So how well did our insurance merchants do?

Zurich insurance had a 7-day EPC rating of $250.88. That means that affiliates are earning an average 250.88 for every 100 visitors they send to Zurich Insurance.

Wow!

Now what about those commission rates?

Well, at the Good Sam Club, if the customer completes a form and becomes a member, Good Sam will pay you $5.00. That’s JUST to fill out a form.

And if they purchase an Emergency Road Service package, you’ll get paid $15.00.

Not bad!

You can find even MORE merchants at the following affiliate networks:

„ Linkshare
linkshare.com

„ BeFree
affiliates.befree.com

„ Clickbank

Cheap Sources of Site Content

Because we want to leave the selling job up to the merchant, an affiliate’s job is to ‘pre-sell’ their merchants’ products.

To pre-sell, you need site content.

Content consists of articles and endorsements that explains how your visitors problems can be solved by using the products you promote. In most cases, webmasters write their own endorsements for the products they promote.

However, if you aren’t inclined to write product endorsements, you can:

„ Find Free Content
„ Use Merchants’ Ad Copy
„ Pay for Content

I like looking for free content first.

Staying with our ‘insurance’ topic, I searched Google for the terms “Free Articles”+ “Insurance” and found the following articles listed at legalwhiz.com:

• “How to Save on Title Insurance Costs”
• “Understanding the Terms of Your New Loan”
• “Common Sense Mortgage Tips!”

In many cases, the author will allow you to use his work on your site if you include credit to the author and a link back to his site.

This is even MORE effective when the author has an affiliate program and you can make money from that link.

To get approval to use the article, you’d simply email the author a request, and they will usually be very happy to have you use their articles on your site.

Another way to get free content is to use what the merchant makes available to their affiliates.

For example, here is an email promotion that Corey Rudl gives his affiliates to promote his very popular ‘Insiders Secrets to Internet Marketing’ course.

Dear Friend,

This e-mail is extremely urgent so please read the entire thing… I would feel terrible if you missed out on this because you did not get my e-mail in time.

I just got an e-mail from Corey Rudl and he said there were only 150 copies left of the new version of his best-selling Internet marketing course, The Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business on the Internet, that includes the $952 in FREE bonuses!

Chances are, as you read this, a lot of those 150 copies are already gone.

Just to recap my last e-mail, Corey Rudl is literally “the” guru of Internet marketing… he’s grown his online businesses to over $7.6 million in online sales last year and he gets over 1.8 million visitors to his web sites every month!

And in the new version of his best selling course he is going to show everything from step-by-step instructions you can use to start your very own Internet business in as little as 48 hours to how to build a top-selling web site… for less than $100!

No matter how small your budget is, Corey shows you the cheapest ways to build a web site that sells!

He is going to show you where to find hot products (in 20 minutes or LESS!) that you can start selling TODAY! These in-demand products will sell like hot cakes, no matter what your experience!

Corey will even reveal his personal rolodex with 100s of FREE and cheap online tools, resources, and software that you can use to automate your web site (and save yourself at least 35 hours every week)!

And if that’s not enough, he is going to even reveal, for the first time, some of his most advanced strategies like how to get #1 rankings in the search engines and get tons of free traffic from the “Big Guys” like Google… and his secret to writing sales copy that increases sales by 400% (or MORE)!

Like I said before, I know these strategies are going to make my business tons of extra money in 2004 and as my subscriber I want to make sure you experience the same rewards, so go to…

www.marketingtips.com/t.cgi/3885

… if the page is still there, this means you made
it in time and he still has some copies of his course with the additional $952 worth of FREE bonuses!

So please hurry! And if you have any questions, just let me know.

All the best…

As you can see, that copy is written in the first-person, so it looks like it is coming directly from you. Use merchant copy judiciously however, as your credibility will take a beating if your subscribers and visitors have seen the exact same copy in other newsletters and on other affiliate sites.

Lastly, you can have articles written for you, sometimes very inexpensively.

Once you have organized your content, it’s time to start putting you’re your site together.

The Fastest Way to Build Your WebSite

There are 3 steps to quickly build your website. They are:

1. Register a Domain
2. Domain Hosting
3. Buy Template

Domain registration is painless, and CHEAP. Go to Godaddy.com where it will cost you 8.95/year for each domain. You can get them even cheaper when you register for more than one year.

Here are two good, yet inexpensive, hosting services that I recommend.

GoDaddy.com - $8.95/mo.
• HostRocket - $9.95/mo.

The quickest way to build a website is to buy a template. Here is a list of some of the best template sites I’ve found to date:

o 4Templates.com
o BigWebmaster.com
o BoxedArt.com
o DollarTemplates.com

My personal favorite is BoxedArt.com. You can download as many templates as you want from Boxed Art, all for only $49.96 for six months access.

Once you’ve placed your content in your template and sent it to your web host, it’s time to join affiliate programs.

Sign-Up for Affiliate Programs

Go back to Commission Junction or the site where you found products you want to promote and sign up for the merchants’ affiliate programs.

The reason you build your site before joining the programs, is to have a site to show the merchant. This demonstrates that you are indeed serious about selling their product, and will almost guarantee your acceptance into their program.

Get Oodles of Traffic Today!

After placing merchant links on your site, it’s time to let the world know about your site.

Although I discuss ‘29 Ways to Market Your Site’ in the Super Affiliate Handbook, my favorite way to bring visitors to my sites is by using cheap Pay- Per-Click search engine advertising.

The primary benefit of PPC’s is that you can drive targeted traffic to your site quickly, instead of waiting months for the search engines to list your site… if they ever do.

Just a few of these include:

Google.com
Overture.com
• Enhance Interactive
Findwhat.com
Kanoodle.com

Pay-per-clicks allow you to bid on terms or keywords that are relevant to your site. In our insurance site example, the Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool produced a list that included terms like:

car insurance
insurance
health insurance
life insurance
home insurance
affordable health insurance
travel insurance
renters insurance
insurance quote
car insurance quote
insurance lead

You should be able to find and bid on HUNDREDS, if not thousands, of terms in any category you choose. The more keywords you list your site under, the more exposure your site will get.

I HIGHLY recommend that you use PPC’s to advertise your site. I get returns of 2, 3, 4, and sometimes even FIVE dollars for every dollar I spend advertising my site.

So, let’s summarize again the steps that it takes to build an affiliate site…

„ Find a HUGE Market
„ Find Products & Services
„ Collect/Create Web Content
„ Build Site
„ Market Site
„ and… Enjoy the BIG Kachings!

Get Unlimited Bandwidth From Your Host For Free

NOTE: This applies only to specific hostin’ companies, due to de specific setup needed and does have its drawbacks.

While settin’ up hostin’ space with a specific company I often deal with, I noticed that dey used a shared IP. (IP shared by two or more websites/domains.) Well, de rates for unlimited bandwidth were around $50+ per month, which I found unreasonable. I didnt require much space, and didnt want to be limited to a mere 3 gig of traffic per month.

Back on track. When settin’ up de acct, de hostin’ company needs to know de domain name so that dey can direct it accordin’ly. (example: ‘http://www.123.4.567.890/~user1/ , ‘http://www.123.4.567.890/~user2/ etc)

At this point you can give a url that doesnt belon’ to you at all. As lon’ as de nameservers dont change, that should have absolutely no negative effects on you or your site whatsoever.

How it works is this:

The host propogates you a certain amount space on its servers, and monitors de traffic that enters deir space through de domain its registered under. Bein’ that de domain isn’t connected to de site at all, it registers ZERO traffic.

Zero traffic registered = can’t possibly go over bandwidth restrictions
can’t possibly go over bandwidth restrictions = free unlimited bandwidth

Now de problems with this (besides de ethical ones) is that your host may offer X amount of mail addys with de acct (you@y…) and dese will not work, as de name isnt on deir DNS. However, some domain companies allow you to set it up regardless. Anoder problem seems to be strictly cosmetic, but can be highly problematic… Once you attach de domain you want onto de site, each page comes up/w de ip/UN de host propagated to your
acct. Its at this point where you have to have a phenominal 10-15 character alphanumerical or better (#, &, etc) pw, or your site will be vulnerable to attack since de attacker already has your UN. This only gives attackers a slight advantage as de amount of time it would take to brute force a 10 character pw @ a rate of 1,000,000 per
second is 10 years. Add numbers and case sensitivity to that and it becomes approx 26,980 years.

While I’m on it, I may as well add that if you use this method, obviously you are goin’ to be usin’ de lowest cost hostin’ plan available, which in turn will offer de least amount of space. Thats why free hosts were invented.

Free hosts suck as a general rule. Who wants a site smodered in ads? However, if you upload all your programs, graphics and oder large files (have a backup of course) to a reliable free host and target them accordin’ly from your site you have just freed up a signifigant amount of space. The only setback/w this is havin’ to keep an index card or file around/w your pws, as you should never use de same one twice, and want to use complicated ones.

Bandwidth Explained

This is well written explanation about bandwidth, very useful info.

BandWidth Explained

Most hostin’ companies offer a variety of bandwidth options in deir plans. So exactly what is bandwidth as it relates to web hostin’? Put simply, bandwidth is de amount of traffic that is allowed to occur between your web site and de rest of de internet. The amount of bandwidth a hostin’ company can provide is determined by deir network connections, both internal to deir data center and external to de public internet.

Network Connectivity

The internet, in de most simplest of terms, is a group of millions of computers connected by networks. These connections within de internet can be large or small dependin’ upon de cablin’ and equipment that is used at a particular internet location. It is de size of each network connection that determines how much bandwidth is available. For example, if you use a DSL connection to connect to de internet, you have 1.54 Mega bits (Mb) of bandwidth. Bandwidth derefore is measured in bits (a sin’le 0 or 1). Bits are grouped in bytes which form words, text, and oder information that is transferred between your computer and de internet.

If you have a DSL connection to de internet, you have dedicated bandwidth between your computer and your internet provider. But your internet provider may have thousands of DSL connections to deir location. All of dese connection aggregate at your internet provider who den has deir own dedicated connection to de internet (or multiple connections) which is much larger than your sin’le connection. They must have enough bandwidth to serve your computin’ needs as well as all of deir oder customers. So while you have a 1.54Mb connection to your internet provider, your internet provider may have a 255Mb connection to de internet so it can accommodate your needs and up to 166 oder users (255/1.54).

Traffic

A very simple analogy to use to understand bandwidth and traffic is to think of highways and cars. Bandwidth is de number of lanes on de highway and traffic is de number of cars on de highway. If you are de only car on a highway, you can travel very quickly. If you are stuck in de middle of rush hour, you may travel very slowly since all of de lanes are bein’ used up.

Traffic is simply de number of bits that are transferred on network connections. It is easiest to understand traffic usin’ examples. One Gigabyte is 2 to de 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes. One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. To put this in perspective, it takes one byte to store one character. Imagine 100 file cabinets in a buildin’, each of dese cabinets holds 1000 folders. Each folder has 100 papers. Each paper contains 100 characters - A GB is all de characters in de buildin’. An MP3 son’ is about 4MB, de same son’ in wav format is about 40MB, a full len’th movie can be 800MB to 1000MB (1000MB = 1GB).

If you were to transfer this MP3 son’ from a web site to your computer, you would create 4MB of traffic between de web site you are downloadin’ from and your computer. Dependin’ upon de network connection between de web site and de internet, de transfer may occur very quickly, or it could take time if oder people are also downloadin’ files at de same time. If, for example, de web site you download from has a 10MB connection to de internet, and you are de only person accessin’ that web site to download your MP3, your 4MB file will be de only traffic on that web site. However, if three people are all downloadin’ that same MP at de same time, 12MB (3 x 4MB) of traffic has been created. Because in this example, de host only has 10MB of bandwidth, someone will have to wait. The network equipment at de hostin’ company will cycle through each person downloadin’ de file and transfer a small portion at a time so each person’s file transfer can take place, but de transfer for everyone downloadin’ de file will be slower. If 100 people all came to de site and downloaded de MP3 at de same time, de transfers would be extremely slow. If de host wanted to decrease de time it took to download files simultaneously, it could increase de bandwidth of deir internet connection (at a cost due to upgradin’ equipment).

Hostin’ Bandwidth

In de example above, we discussed traffic in terms of downloadin’ an MP3 file. However, each time you visit a web site, you are creatin’ traffic, because in order to view that web page on your computer, de web page is first downloaded to your computer (between de web site and you) which is den displayed usin’ your browser software (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) . The page itself is simply a file that creates traffic just like de MP3 file in de example above (however, a web page is usually much smaller than a music file).

A web page may be very small or large dependin’ upon de amount of text and de number and quality of images integrated within de web page. For example, de home page for CNN.com is about 200KB (200 Kilobytes = 200,000 bytes = 1,600,000 bits). This is typically large for a web page. In comparison, Yahoo’s home page is about 70KB.

How Much Bandwidth Is Enough?

It depends (don’t you hate that answer). But in truth, it does. Since bandwidth is a significant determinant of hostin’ plan prices, you should take time to determine just how much is right for you. Almost all hostin’ plans have bandwidth requirements measured in months, so you need to estimate de amount of bandwidth that will be required by your site on a monthly basis

If you do not intend to provide file download capability from your site, de formula for calculatin’ bandwidth is fairly straightforward:

Average Daily Visitors x Average Page Views x Average Page Size x 31 x Fudge Factor

If you intend to allow people to download files from your site, your bandwidth calculation should be:

[(Average Daily Visitors x Average Page Views x Average Page Size) +
(Average Daily File Downloads x Average File Size)] x 31 x Fudge Factor

Let us examine each item in de formula:

Average Daily Visitors - The number of people you expect to visit your site, on average, each day. Dependin’ upon how you market your site, this number could be from 1 to 1,000,000.

Average Page Views - On average, de number of web pages you expect a person to view. If you have 50 web pages in your web site, an average person may only view 5 of those pages each time dey visit.

Average Page Size - The average size of your web pages, in Kilobytes (KB). If you have already designed your site, you can calculate this directly.

Average Daily File Downloads - The number of downloads you expect to occur on your site. This is a function of de numbers of visitors and how many times a visitor downloads a file, on average, each day.

Average File Size - Average file size of files that are downloadable from your site. Similar to your web pages, if you already know which files can be downloaded, you can calculate this directly.

Fudge Factor - A number greater than 1. Usin’ 1.5 would be safe, which assumes that your estimate is off by 50%. However, if you were very unsure, you could use 2 or 3 to ensure that your bandwidth requirements are more than met.

Usually, hostin’ plans offer bandwidth in terms of Gigabytes (GB) per month. This is why our formula takes daily averages and multiplies them by 31.

Summary

Most personal or small business sites will not need more than 1GB of bandwidth per month. If you have a web site that is composed of static web pages and you expect little traffic to your site on a daily basis, go with a low bandwidth plan. If you go over de amount of bandwidth allocated in your plan, your hostin’ company could charge you over usage fees, so if you think de traffic to your site will be significant, you may want to go through de calculations above to estimate de amount of bandwidth required in a hostin’ plan.
