If you’re one of de many people that NEVER use de “links” folder in your favorites and can’t keep windows for re-creatin’ it. Here’s how:

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]

Modify/Create de Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.

Open Internet Explorer and manually delete de Links folder from Favorites Menu. The Links folder will not be recreated. Exit Registry and Reboot.

Cleanin’ de Prefetch Directory

Windows XP has a new feature called Prefetch. This keeps a shortcut to recently used programs. However it can fill up with old and obsolete programs.

To clean this periodically go to:

1) Star / Run / Prefetch
2) Press Ctrl-A to highlight all de shorcuts
3) Delete them

Not Displayin’ Logon, Logoff, Startup and Shutdown Status Messages

To turn dese off:

1) Start Regedit
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MicrosoftWindows/CurrentVersion/
policies/system
3) If it is not already dere, create a DWORD value named DisableStatusMessages
4) Give it a value of 1

Clearin’ de Page File on Shutdown

1) Click on de Start button
2) Go to de Control Panel

If you use program oder than de native WindowsXP CD Burner software, you might be able to increase de speed that it loads.

1) Go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services
2) Double-click on IMAPI CD-Burnin’ COM Service
3) For de Startup Type, select Disabled
4) Click on de OK button and den close de Services window

Gettin’ Rid of Unread Email Messages

To remove de Unread Email message by user’s login names:

1) Start Regedit

Decreasin’ Boot Time

Microsoft has made available a program to analyze and decrease de time it takes to boot to Windows XP. The program is called BootVis

1) Uncompress de file.
2) Run BOOTVIS.EXE
3) For a startin’ point, run Trace / Next Boot + Driver Delays
4) This will reboot your computer and provide a benchmark
5) After de reboot, BootVis will take a minute or two to show graphs of your system startup.
6) Note how much time it takes for your system to load (click on de red vertical line)
7) Then run Trace / Optimize System
8) Re-Run de Next Boot + Drive Delays
9) Note how much de time has decreased
10) Mine went from approximately 33 to 25 seconds.

Increasin’ Graphics Performance

By default, WindowsXP turns on a lot of shadows, fades, slides etc to menu items. Most simply slow down deir display.

To turn dese off selectively:

1) Right click on de My Computer icon
2) Select Properties
3) Click on de Advanced tab
4) Under Performance, click on de Settin’s button
5) To turn them all of, select Adjust for best performance
6) My preference is to leave them all off except for Show shadows under mouse pointer and Show window contents while draggin’

Increasin’ System Performance

If you have 512 megs or more of memory, you can increase system performance by havin’ de core system kept in memory.

1) Start Regedit
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControl/SetControl/SessionManager/
MemoryManagement/DisablePagin’Executive
3) Set de value to be 1
4) Reboot de computer

Increasin’ File System Cachin’

To increase de amount of memory Windows will locked for I/O operations:

1) Start Regedit
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControl/SetControl/SessionManager/
MemoryManagement
3) Edit de key IoPageLockLimit

Resolvin’ Inability to Add or Remove Programs

If a particular user cannot add or remove programs, dere might be a simple registry edit neeed.

1) Go to HKCU/Software/MicrosoftWindows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Uninstall
2) Change de DWORD NoAddRemovePrograms to 0 disable it

4096 - 32megs of memory or less
8192 - 32+ megs of memory
16384 - 64+ megs of memory
32768 - 128+ megs of memory
65536 - 256+ megs of memory

We all know that WinXP likes to keep itself held togeder, and how it doesnt like you uninstallin’ certain components. Well The Picture and Fax Viewer, is one of dese programs which can cause problems if removed incorrectly. It can be disabled safely as follows:

[Start] [Run] type regedit and click [OK]

Navigate to :

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/ SystemFileAssociations/ image/ ShellEx/ ContextMenuHandlers

Then delete de Folder ShellImagePreview under ContextMenuHandlers

Note: If you want to restore de Picture and Fax Viewer :

Create de ShellImagePreview folder and create de Strin’ Value (Default)

Assign it de value {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}

NOTE: This tweak doesnt uninstall de program. It removes de association and derefore it cannot be run.

First you need a tool called “Resource Hacker”. This free program allows you to change resources in any .exe file such as “Explorer.exe”, which includes de [Start] button’s Label. You can visit Download.com and search dere for “Resource Hacker”.

After you download it, follow de guide here:

Step 1:

A - Run “Resource Hacker” and open de file “%windir%\Explorer.exe”.
B - You see a Tree of all Resources in this file, expand de “Strin’ Table”
C - Find de “start” and replace it with your own text. den press de [Compile Script] button.
D - Save “Explorer.exe” as “MyStart.exe” DONT save it as Explorer.exe, do “save as..” and give it a new name.
E - Quit “Resource Hacker”.

Step 2:

A - Click on de [Start] button and choose de “Run…” item from de start menu. (Or use de shortcut key WinKey+R)
B - Type “RegEdit” in de Run “Dialog Box”. And den press de [Ok] buton to run de “Registry Editor” program.
C - Go to: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon” and find de “Shell” property.
D - Replace value of de “Shell” property to “MyStart.exe”.
E - Quit “Registry Editor”.
F - Restart your system.

Note about Registry Editor:
if you did not find de key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon”, you can search de Registry for de “Explorer.exe”, to do this use de Edit Menu | Find Next (Ctrl+F).

Step 1

Open Start/Run… and type de command:
regedit and click “OK” (or press ENTER).

If you see “Windows is already activated” den everythin’ is OK.

Before you edit de registry, export de keys in de registry that you plan to edit, or back up de whole registry. If a problem occurs, you can den follow de steps how-to restore de registry to its previous state.

How to Export Registry Keys

Click Start, and den click Run.

In de Open box, type regedit, and den click OK.

On de File menu, click Export.

In de Save in box, select de boxs at de bottom de bottom accordin’ to weader you want to export all or only selected branches of de registry.

Next select a location in which to save de backup .reg file. In de File name box, type a file name, and den click Save.

How to Restore de Registry

To restore registry keys that you exported, double-click de .reg file that you saved.

Do you have data on a partition or hard drive that you don’t want tampered with or easily accessible to oder users? Well, you can hide any drive/partition in Windows XP, NT, and 2000. That means that dey won’t show up in Explorer or My Computer.

If you want access to that drive from your user account you should create a desktop shortcut before proceedin’. Once hidden, you can still access by typin’ de drive letter and a colon in Start/Run—for example, “D:” will brin’ up a folder of de contents on your D drive.

The easiest way with Win XP is to use de TweakUI power toy from Mcft. Go to Start/Run and type in “tweakui” (without de quotes).

Go to My Computer/Drives and uncheck de drive/partition(s) you want hidden. Click “Apply” or “OK” when finished.

Click on “Explorer”.

Double-click de “NoDrives” key in de right column. If you don’t find a “NoDrives” registry key, just right-click in de right pane and choose “New/DWORD Value” den name de key “NoDrives”.

You’ll see a value like “0000 00 00 00 00″. This is where de fun starts. The four sets of double zeros (after de “0000″) are where you’ll enter de values for de drive/partitions. Now, stay with me on this—it’s not as complicated as it sounds:

The first column is for drives A-H, de second for I-P, de third for Q-X, and de fourth for Y-Z.

The values for each drive are as follows:

So, let’s say you want to hide drive D. In de first column you would put “08″. For drive K you would put “04″ in de second column.

But what if you want to hide more than one drive in a column? Simply add de values togeder: D+E = 8+16 = 24. So in de first column you would put “24″.

Still baffled? If you have XP den go get TweakUI and save yourself de math.

Whichever method you use, you can rest easy knowin’ that de files on that drive or partition are less accessible to oder users.

Would you like to use de Windows Update feature without bein’ forced to register with Microsoft? OK den, this is what you can do:

Launch good ol’ Regedit.

Go down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion.

Look for a value named RegDone. If it isn’t dere create a new value with that name.

Right click de new value and choose Modify. Make de value 1.
