Skillset, the UK Sector Skills Council for the audio-visual industries, has announced a new network of film academies to educate and train new filmmaking talent. Seven academies in England, Scotland, and Wales, will share over £5m funding and will work together to provide new courses (including the first ever film MBA), summer schools, work placements, master classes, bursaries, online learning resources and a talent scout programme to help develop the next generation of UK filmmakers.

Courses on offer range from City & Guilds and Higher Education Diplomas through to postgraduate programmes, as well as short courses and development support for existing professionals. The Film Business Academy – the first ever dedicated film business centre in the UK – will create the first full and part time Masters courses.

A Bronze Award went to the Honda Grrr game, created in conjunction with Weiden+Kennedy UK and Unit 9, which took the ‘hate’ campaign online. London-based Great Guns was honoured in the Cyber Lions category for its AppealNow Web site (www.appealnow.com), a Web site appealing against unfair parking tickets that depict traffic wardens in a less than flattering light. It won a Gold Award.

London-based 20:20 won a Silver in the Cyber Lions category for its CSI:NY Killer site, in which a serial killer speaks the user’s name and their name also appears in newspaper reports. Users also received a forensic report via email with their details on a few days before the show’s transmission.

A campaign for deodorant Axe in Columbia by Lowe/SSPM proved spot on as it collected a Media Lions Award for best use of magazines. It’s more-than-direct approach used a sticker-top on a magazine that, when peeled off, revealed the line: “Taking her dress off without her getting mad at you. That’s the Axe effect.”

Reflecting the growth in online campaigns, the Cannes Cyber Lions saw a rise of 22 per cent in entries over 2004, with Crispin Porter + Bogusky the Grand Prix winner for its Comeclean.com Web site

Unsurprisingly, Weiden+Kennedy UK’s Grrr ad for Honda swept the board at Cannes, winning the Film, Titanium Lions, and the Film Journalists’ Award. It had already scooped a D&AD Award earlier this year.

Sean Thompson, the ad’s copywriter and art director, said the campaign was based on a hatred for diesel engines. “We thought the word ‘hate’ was very powerful, and that hate could be a positive thing if it made things better,” he said.

The Cannes Lions Direct Grand Prix top gong went to the unusual Renault Modus Channel Hopper advert (central images), which showed two films broadcast simultaneously across two TV networks – one showing the hero happy, the other sad – and attracted over eight million viewers. The Cannes Press & Poster Award was scooped by a campaign by TBWA Paris for an EMI Music Piracy Awareness series of adverts (images, left). The art direction wowed judges, as did the tag line “Nothing Great Comes Easy”.

The Cannes Media Lions was a hotly fought contest, with the Grand Prix won by Procter and Gamble’s campaign for Biomat washing powder in Israel. This was based on encouraging people to donate clothes to a branded Biomat truck, which were then washed and sorted in front of them.

The UK was represented in the Media Lions list of winners by Zenith Optimedia for its +HP campaign, that showed technology company HP working with a range of other companies to bring technology solutions that impacted on everyday life.

The best brand and advertising campaigns from the past year were celebrated at the Cannes Lions Awards – the 52nd international advertising festival held in Cannes last month. The winners, drawn from over 22,000 entries from 81 countries, saw prizes awarded in categories including direct advertising, Press, outdoor advertising, online media campaigns, and film. Entries were up 18 per cent year-on-year, said organizers.
