From online storage to online backup. Online backup is important for us to safeguard our data. We still run the risk of a fire in our own premises. Worse still, if we choose to backup the data in the same computer that we use everyday, we are exposed to the threat of computer viruses, hardware failure and accidents of deletion of critical files in the backup itself.
Why not do it online? Online Backup is one of the newest trend in the market. It is becoming more and more acceptable as the price is cheap (around only $4.95 per month). Instead of purchasing tons of hardware to secure and protect your data in site, you can choose someone to outsource it for you. With their world class safety and advanced standards, featuring large space and badwidth, you can be sure that your data is well protected.
Getting decent image quality is of paramount importance to any project, whatever the size. Although there are no hard and fast rules to ensure you get good image quality, the CCD size will go a long way to help. Most bargain camcorders have one 0.8-megapixel CCD, meaning each image is made up of 800,000 pixels. Although this is adequate, spending more money will get a better 1.3-megapixel CCD. At the top-end of the scale are Canon and Sony’s semi-prosumer models that record 2.2 or even 3.3-megapixels. For truly professional results, though, you need to invest in a 3-CCD model such as the Canon XM2. These 3-CCD models split the image up into primary colours with a dedicated CCD for each colour, and the overall quality is infinitely better.
Most digital camcorders also possess the ability to take still photographs and many have the same memory cards found on digital cameras. This is a nice touch, but one that you shouldn’t place too much emphasis on. The CCD image sensors in camcorders are smaller than in still cameras and any photographs taken are usually only suitable for computer and email use. It is wiser to spend the money on a camcorder with better video image quality and purchase a separate stills camera for taking pictures.
Three new iBooks are now available: a sole 12-inch model, which features a 1GHz G4 processor for £799 and two 14-inch models, one with a 1GHz G4 processor and the other with a 1.2GHz G4 processor, priced at £899 and £1,049 respectively.
Aside from the speedbump, the new iBooks can now hold double the amount of memory and a build to order option allows a SuperDrive to be added to the 14-inch models for the first time.
With both Panther and Apple’s iLife ’04 suite of applications demanding more and more power in order to run, faster iBooks were a necessity. Now, with enhanced power and performance, the ability to install double the memory and new graphics cards, it is possible to run professional applications like Soundtrack, Final Cut Pro and Logic.
Five new PowerBooks are available: two 12-inch models, differentiated primarily by a choice of Combo or SuperDrives, sporting 1.33GHz processors; two 15-inch models, both with 1.5Ghz G4 processors; and a 17- inch model featuring a 1.5Ghz processor.
All SuperDrive-equipped models now burn at 4x speed and a host of build to order options are available, including the ability to add up to 2Gb of memory to the 15-inch and 17-inch models, faster hard drives and more memory to the graphics card. The 12-inch PowerBook keeps its relatively underpowered NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 graphics card.
Most interestingly of all, however, is the fact that each model features a substantial price cut. The 12-inch models are £250 and £300 cheaper respectively, the 15-inch models are £400 and £250 cheaper and the 17-inch model is £400 cheaper.

The colour adjustments we’ve looked at here have largely been aimed at correcting or enhancing colours. But many of the techniques can be adapted to produce more extreme colour alterations. Using Photoshop, it’s possible to mimic many of the effects once generated in darkrooms, including solarisation, sepia-toning, cross-processing and more. Indeed, with a little experimentation, it’s possible to come up with effects never seen before – and sometimes effects you’ll never want to see again… Apart from the ideas we introduce here, you can try out Photoshop’s different layer blending modes, either blending two images together, or duplicating the current image layer then changing the way it interacts with the layer below. Don’t just stop with a single modification or filter, but try combining them. There are so many permutations in Photoshop that you may never exhaust them all.
Brightness/contrast adjustments are the easiest to understand, but they’re also the most destructive with regard to image quality. Why? Because increasing the contrast pushes dark and light pixels off the scale, so that shadow areas of your image become blocked in and highlight areas bleach out.
You need to use the Brightness/Contrast dialog with care, then. If you display Photoshop’s Histogram palette while you work, you’ll see what we mean. The image we’re starting with is rather light and lacking in contrast, so our first attempt at repair is simply to reduce the Brightness value. This looks OK superficially, but the histogram shows the highlights are no longer a true white, and a lot of shadow detail has been ‘clipped’. Increasing the contrast strengthens the colours (remember the link between contrast and saturation), but yet more shadow and highlight detail has been lost.
